Why GetResponse? My Email Marketing Experience
Since I started online in 2012, I have used close to a dozen email marketing services providers. Due to cost, and being on a very tight marketing budget, I usually fund myself moving from one provider to another.
Exporting my list every now and then.
Looking for free email marketing services providers out there. But the truth is, I never found one with the right marketing tools to build my list faster.
That’s the reality of free email marketing services…
Free email marketing solutions usually come with limited services and marketing tools that will help you build engaged subscribers faster. If you’re serious with your online business, free marketing tools are not an option.
Granted, they’re good to start the journey, but as soon as you have money, go for premium service and tools. This is how you build your online business faster and starts seeing significant growth.
During this period, I have tried the following email marketing solutions:
Note: My assessment of all these email marketing services is based on their free plan, or better, free trial period. Getresponse appeals the most, affordable, and provides more tools to help build, manage, and grow my business better.
So, let’s begin…
What is GetResponse?
If you’re new to online marketing, you could probably be wondering, what is GetResponse?
GetResponse is an email marketing services solution founded in 1998 by Simon Grabowski. As a matter of fact, the domain GetResponse.com was registered in 1998 by the CEO, who is also the founder.
It is an application that allows you to create a mailing list, capture users’ data, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, date of birth, gender, etc. And to use these user’s data to personalize your marketing message to improve conversion.
GetResponse allows you to create beautiful newsletters that can be sent to your subscribers. Create autoresponders’ messages that triggered base on predefined events. Capture users data for advanced marketing intelligence.
And not just that.

Either your website is built with Joomla, PrestaShop, Drupal, WordPress, etc…you can use the GetResponse email solution. It integrates with all the major blogging and e-commerce software.
You can also enable Getresponse web forms on your Facebook Business page to capture new subscribers. Getresponse makes it easy to find and collect new subscribers all over the internet with a powerful yet easy to use integration tool.
Also, Getresponse makes it simple to track and measure marketing performance by analyzing clicks, open rate, delivery rate, spam score ratio, user engagement, A/B testing, etc.

However, these are just the basics of GetResponse email marketing services. GetResponse has recently gone beyond the email marketing basics. It has now shifted to a more all-in-one marketing tool.
By providing other marketing services like webinars, Facebook ads, surveys, landing pages, automated sales funnel, Store – Sale your product with GetResponse.
GetResponse has gone beyond the traditional email marketing service, it is now an all-in-one marketing tool.
As you can see, GetResponse is not your average email marketing services provider. Yet, affordable when compared to other competitors.
Read on to find the list of GetResponse Pricing below.
How to Use GetResponse to Grow Your Business
Unlike many of the free email marketing services providers out there, GetResponse provides you with tools that let you grow faster.
These tools are developed to make building your subscribers base easier and faster.
In this GetResponse Review, lets’ take each of these tools one after the other. But first, if you’re new to email marketing, this getting started video tutorial from GetResponse might be helpful.
GetResponse Sign Up Process – Getting Started
The GetResponse signup process is easy and straightforward. No complex signup process involved.
First, visit this link to navigate to the GetResponse website.
On this page, click on the “Sign up free” button at the top right of the page. As you can see in the image below.

GetResponse offers a 30-days free trial offer which you can take advantage of. During this period you can test run all the marketing tools to see how you can build your business with these tools.
Unlike other competitors, you don’t have to enter your credit card detail to signup for the 30-days free trial offer.
It is completely free. No hidden charges. No credit card requires. Only your name and a valid email address are required.
On the next page that comes up, enter your account registration details, and hit the “create account” button below.

An email will be sent to verify your email address. Complete the signup process by verifying your email address.
Once you complete this process, your account is ready to go.
How to Import Your List in GetResponse
If you have an existing mailing list with other marketing solutions, the first thing you may want to do is to import your contact list.
This is easy to complete in Getresponse.
Log into your account and first, create a list. Your list name can be anything of your choice. But makes it relevant to the list interest.
This will helps you in the future to remember why you create the list and help in creating the right message to the right audience.
After creating your first list, click on “Add contact” button on the page.

It will take you to this page where you have two options to choose from on how to import your list.
You can either import your contact one by one manually. Or upload a file in CSV format, use external services, or paste rows.
The next thing is to enter your name and email address on file. Agree to the terms and conditions, hit the “add contact” button.
Your contact will be added to the list you’ve just created.

Now that your first Getresponse list is ready, the next thing you’d want to do is to create a web form to start capturing more email subscribers.
Right?
Let’s see how easy or difficult it could be creating forms in Getresponse…
Getresponse Forms – How Easy it is to Create Web Forms?
This is something I like about Getresponse web forms.
It is easy to use and offer many options to create the right web form for your blog message.
As an advanced form builder, Getresponse offers a drag and drops form builder. The interface is user-friendly, clean, and makes the process easy to follow even for beginners.
At the time of written this line, there are four-ways to create your web forms in Getresponse.

The List Builder Wizard is the easiest way to get your forms up and running in minutes. But this is only good if you’re creating embed web forms.
If you’re creating other types of form, like scroll or exit popup form, the list builder apps are the right tool for that.
There are 220 predesigned email form templates ready to use. 180 landing pages templates, 700 web forms templates, 40 marketing funnels templates, and 5,000 stock photos to choose from.
Each of these form templates can be customized to fit your website needs. Also, the form templates come in different sizes, formats, industries, and types.

Here is a couple of web forms I have created inside Getresponse app for this blog.
The sign up form on this blog homepage was created inside Getresponse. And the sticky sidebar web form also created with Getresponse. Though, I use another WordPress plugin to make it sticky. That’s not part of the Getresponse features.
This web form image below was also created with Getresponse too. Consider I am not anywhere a graphics designer, I would have done better.

The list builder apps are more advanced and allow you to create any type of web form. Whether you want to create popup forms, scroll form, top-notification bar form, download box, exit pop up, shake box, image box, etc.
Getresponse list builder apps allow you to create any of these marketing forms in minutes. You don’t have to be a tech-guru to create any of these forms.
Everything here is drag and drops.

Unlimited Sign up Forms Per List
There is no restriction to how many sign up forms you can create per list.
This is a great advantage if you have to create different sign up forms for the same list on different pages of your website.
Let’s say you’ve created a list for “website traffic eBook download” in GetResponse.
Now, you want to capture subscribers to this list from your blog homepage. Ideally, you may want to capture subscribers to the list in relevant blog posts on your blog, too.
This is easy to achieve in GetResponse.
Open the menu by clicking on the black 9 dots on your user’s account dashboard to reveal the menu panel. Click on “Forms and Survey” from the drop-down menu.

On the next screen, click on create form. From here, create and design your form and assign it to a list of your choice in the settings page.

That’s it..
You can create unlimited web forms for a single list and even have your already created web forms duplicated in minutes.
Getresponse Pricing and Plans
How much does Getresponse cost?
Sure thing, you want to know how competitive the Getresponse pricing fair compared to other email marketing platforms.
I’m going to answer that question below along with the available GetResponse email marketing plans.
There are four (4) plans available on the Getresponse website. Each plan comes with different marketing tools and features. But at a very competitive price compared to its close competitors.
Here are the four plans on the Getresponse website:

As you go beyond 1,000 contacts in your list, the price goes higher.
In regard to the Max plan, this is a dedicated pricing plan for a large email contact list. You’ll need to contact the Getresponse support team to discuss your needs, list size, and request for a demo and negotiate the price.
Key Differences in Plans and Features
All the Getresponse plans cover the basics of email marketing anyone could needs. But there are marketing features that set each plan apart from the other.
This is something you may want to go through to decide what plans best fits your marketing needs.
The core features of the basic plan which is also covered in the other 3 plans include:
These are just a few of what you can do in the Getresponse basic plan. You can view the complete Getresponse email marketing features on this page.
The key differences in the plans and prices did not lie in the number of contacts but in the marketing tools/features available in each plan.
Take another look at the pricing image above. You will notice all the plans are displayed in the 1,000 contact list number. Yet, the prices are different.
This tells us it is not just about numbers, but about the marketing features in each Getresponse plans.
So let’s take a look at the major differences in the plans. For me, the core differences in the plans are:
Conversion Funnel.

This is Getresponse full set of tools and marketing templates for building automated sales funnels. These tools allow you to move customers from one stage to the other in the conversion funnel.
Unless you’re on the “Plus” plan or higher, these features are not fully available in the basic plan.
In the Getresponse conversion funnels tools, there are 3 types of funnels:
As a Getresponse basic plan customer, there is no restriction on your use of leads funnel. But you’re limited to create just one sales funnels.
Webinar.
In the Getresponse basic plan, you have no access to webinar tools or funnels. The webinar funnels is completely out of the Basic plan customers.

It is available in the “Plus” plan and higher. And it comes with some features restriction even in the Plus plan. You can only host up to 100 attendees and the recording time is capped at 3 hours.
You can’t do a paid webinar in the Plus plan. Only in the Professional and Max can you run paid webinar for attendees.
Automation.
This is a powerful tool that lets you build complex autoresponder email sequence base on user behavior. This is far more than the traditional autoresponder email services.
It is a powerful lead nurturing tool that let you follow up on your subscribers with the right message base on their behaviour.
To learn more about Getresponse marketing automation tool, watch this video.
In the Basic Plan, you have access to the following automation:
- Welcome & thank you emails.
- Drip campaigns.
- Birthday emails – send a personalized birthday message to subscribers on their birthday.
- Click & open followups emails.
- Contact tagging.
But on the Plus plan and higher, you have access to everything in the Basic and as well as the followings:
- Custom workflows.
- Automation builder.
- Contact scoring.
- Abandoned order/cart recovery.
- The site and event tracking.
- Automation segmentation.
- Advanced event tracking.
Support.
Support is limited to 24/7 live chat and email support in all the Getresponse plans except for Max.
There is an additional phone call, dedicated, and slack supports for customers on the Max plan.
Getresponse Integrations.
All the Getresponse Plans support over 150 apps integrations including but not limited to:
- WordPress.
- Shopify.
- PrestaShop.
- WooCommerce.
- Zapier.
- Magento.
- Stripe.
- Joomla.
- PayPal.
- Salesforce.
- Etsy
- Drupal.
How Getresponse Pricing Compare to Others
To be fair, Getresponse pricing is relatively cheaper than many of its rivals. But that’s not to say it offers less-quality marketing tools.
On the contrary, you get more for paying less with Getresponse. Let’s take a look at what other competitors are doing in terms of pricing.
Aweber price 500 contact list at $19/month. Though while Aweber does offer a 30-days forever free account for 500 subscribers base, $19 for 500 contacts is a bit above the industry average price in a paid plan.
Active Campaign price the same 1,000 contact list at $29/month. And from what it is displayed on the company’s website, the Getresponse Basic plan fairs better than the ActiveCampaign Lite plan feature-wise.
ConverKit is one of the email marketing solutions that offer forever free plan for up to 1,000 subscribers. That’s truly a good marketing offer.
But when you go up the ladder and decide to take up the paid plan. 1,000 subscriber list is priced at $29/month.
MailChimp offers a very competitive price than Getresponse, but the marketing tools can’t be compared to that of Getresponse. And good to note that MailChimp also charges for both subscribe and unsubscribe contacts in your list.
This could be a significant hidden cost to your marketing budget. Why should anyone be paying for unsubscribing contacts on their list?
Getresponse Core Features
By comparison, Getresponse email marketing solutions set it apart from many of the competitors. And one of the most comprehensive in the industry.
Getresponse constantly improves and expands it’s marketing features to meet with the reality of online marketing on the ground.
Let’s take a peep into some of the core email marketing features that make Getresponse what it is today.
Analytics.
One of the core features of Getresponse is the campaign analytics dashboard.
There is the basic campaign analytics you’d expect to see in every email marketing solution. Like clicks, open rate, unsubscriber list, subscribers, etc…
But Getresponse offers much more than that just the basics of email campaign analytics.

You can compare two previously sent email messages side by side to learn more about what works. How your subscribers engage with it?
From the analytics interface, you can resend a message to any segment of the audience by clicking on the email icon.
A/B Split Testing
If you’re into marketing for long, you know the importance of testing to see what works.
Getresponse A/B testing allows you to test up to five variants of your copy against each other. And you can test the content of your subject line, from fields, email content, and the delivery time.
This is a very needed tool if you’re going to improve on your email open rate, clicks, and engagement.

Conversion Funnel
This is a new e-commerce marketing feature recently introduce by Getresponse.
With the conversion funnel features, it turns Getresponse from only an email marketing solutions to something you can practically use for eCommerce solutions.
This is a useful tool if you’re a solo-entrepreneur selling something online. The conversion funnel in Getresponse is an idea to let you create a full sales funnel without the need for an additional marketing app.
The good thing is that this feature is available on all plans. But on the Basic plan, you’re restricted to just one sale funnel. And you can’t use the user abandoned cart function.
This feature lets you send an email message to customers who add items to the cart but didn’t complete the purchase.
However, you can also integrate other third-party eCommerce platforms with your shop on Getresponse. Like Shopify, Bigcommerce, and Esty.
Here is a break down of Getresponse Conversion funnels and how it works.
Double or Single opt-ins?
For beginners, let’s explore what a double opt-in and single opt-in is?

In every email marketing solution, adding subscribers to your mailing list requires that users opt-in to receive newsletters from you. They need to give you their permission before you can send them email messages.
So if you use a single opt-in for your email sign up process, it means once the user fills in the required information and hits the CTA button (call-to-action), he’s automatically joining your mailing list.
But if you enable the double opt-in process for email signup, this means users have to confirm their email address before they could join your mailing list.
Even if there is a gift for subscribing. They won’t be able to access it until after their email address has been confirmed.
Both sign up process have advantages and disadvantages.
The main advantage of a single opt-in process is that it makes it easy to get people on your list. As a result, it grows your list size faster than when double opt-in is enabled.
People don’t have to go through the email verification process to join your newsletter and receive the gift.
The disadvantage is that your contact list can quickly get filled up with spams emails addresses, bot, and people who aren’t genuinely interested in your message.
While double opt-in ensures that only the people with a valid email address can join your mailing list. And to a degree, it allows only the people with high interest in your teachings to be part of your newsletter.
For me, double opt-in is way better than a single opt-in sign-up process.
Though, I have a couple of time I use the single opt-in process. But from personal experience, having a small engaged email list size is better than having large but un-engaged subscribers.
In Getresponse, you have the option to chose what best fit your email marketing type.
Switching from single to double opt-in takes just a click of the mouse. And you don’t have to rebuild another form to make this work on an exiting sign-up form.
This function is on-demand in Getresponse, you can go forth and back on an existing web form the way you like.
Email Delivery Rate
If your emails are not hitting your subscribers inbox, it never get read. Simple!
While many email marketing services provider always tries to hide this aspect of their services, Getresponse is bold to discuss this on the website.
Let’s take it from the Getresponse website directly…
At GetResponse we are frequently asked about the quality of our deliverability rate. Because deliverability depends on many factors, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate could vary for each mailing. For all our customers collectively, however, we are proud to say our overall deliverability rate currently stands at 99%.
To make this statement more transparent to customers as it may be, Getresponse provides you the delivery rate for each outgoing email in the analytics dashboard.
So, if something is not true about the company’s above statement, you’re the first to know.
Getresponse 30-Days Free Trial Offer
The Getresponse 30-days free trial offer is truly generous. No credit card required, and you don’t have to risk anything by sign-up for the 30-days free offer.
