Bottom line:

If you’re a solo blogger or small team and want a capable, affordable SEO platform that now covers AI search tracking, SE Ranking is the smarter choice. If you run a larger agency or campaign that demands the biggest keyword and backlink databases on the market, Semrush justifies its price.

Semrush vs. SE Ranking Overview

Both SEO tools are cloud-based, popular, and all-in-one SEO platforms. Semrush and SE Ranking enable you to perform various SEO tasks directly within their platforms.

We’ll cover everything you can do on both SEO platforms in a minute; let’s briefly review this first.

Semrush is a public SaaS company founded in August 2008. Since then, the company has established itself as a leading voice in the search engine optimization (SEO) industry.

It has already been used by over 10 million users worldwide.

Semrush has over 55 SEO and content marketing tools, making it one of the most feature-rich all-in-one SEO platforms.

SE Ranking, on the other hand, was established in 2013. It is a new SEO platform compared to Semrush’s existence.

However, that’s not to say that this SEO software lacks in its arsenal.

Based in the United Kingdom, Ingestre Palace, London, SE Ranking is a privately owned company. It has a user base of over 1 million professionals.

SE Ranking has over 20 SEO and content marketing tools to help you in every step of the SEO journey.

Semrush and SE Ranking have excellent user review star ratings on trustworthy sites, such as G2 Crowd, TrustPilot, and Capterra, averaging over 4.5 stars across all review sites.

Let’s begin our review of the Semrush and SE Ranking comparison with ease of use.

Ease of Use

One of the first things I look for in a tool is how easily I can navigate the user interface. Is it difficult or easy to find what I’m looking for?

Based on this aspect, let’s explore the ease of use of SE Ranking and Semrush.

SE Ranking

First, the SE Ranking sign-up process is easy. It required only your name and email address.

You can try it for free for a 14-day period, with no Credit card required. Once your account is up, you can use the SEO tool.

The user interface is beginner-friendly.

Finding your way around essential SEO tools isn’t difficult. Here is what the SE Ranking dashboard looks like when writing;

SE Ranking project overview for wprblogger.com featuring AI search mentions, keyword ranking trends, and key SEO metrics like organic traffic and health score.

Each SEO tool has a module with a brief description tooltip of what you can achieve. The AI search platforms are visible at the top of the page.

To start each tool, click its icon or use the top navigation menu.

SE Ranking has done a neat job of organizing the most essential SEO tools into six main menus. You don’t necessarily need an onboarding process to use SE Ranking.

But if you need to find something, there is a live chat on the page.

The last thing you’d expect is to get lost in your dashboard; that will never happen with SE Ranking.

Semrush

Signing up for Semrush is not complicated. It requires an email and your name.

You must enter a valid payment method if you sign up for the free trial. However, you won’t be charged until the trial period has ended.

Semrush offers several SEO and content marketing tools, and it’s no wonder its dashboard has a learning curve.

For beginners, the dashboard can be easy to navigate.

Here’s the Semrush SEO dashboard.

NOTE:

The data in your dashboard depends on your connected site. Your dashboard will certainly look different from the image below, but this gives you a sense of what to expect.

Semrush dashboard interface for cybernaira.com showing SEO metrics including organic traffic, keywords, and domain authority score.

While Semrush has done a great job keeping things organized and structured, its extensive list of tools on the sidebar means you need time to get used to its menus and navigation.

Once you log into your Semrush account, everything is thrown at you. And it could easily get overwhelmed seeing dozens of tools at once.

This is one area Semrush needs to review and improve to better support first-time users of its platform.

However, there is an extensive help document that explains the purpose of each tool and how to use it.

Ease of Use Verdict: SE Ranking Winner

The Semrush dashboard is clean and easy to use, but SE Ranking did a better job and is more beginner-friendly.

For first-time SEO software users, you won’t find it hard to use SE Ranking.

Link building is at the heart of search ranking signals; getting the correct links will be difficult without accurate link data.

To assess the accuracy of the link data from both tools, I used a test site with a large number of links.

Let’s compare SE Ranking and Semrush link-building tools.

SE Ranking

So, I entered the test site URL into the SE Ranking backlink checker tool. Here is the result;

SE Ranking backlink checker dashboard showing 205.9K backlinks and 8.7K referring domains with a dofollow versus nofollow ratio.

There are some vital link data that I focus on in the report:

  • Referring Domains
  • Number of backlinks
  • Anchor text data
  • Link attributes data
  • Referring domain’s authority score
  • Top linking countries
  • Top linking pages on the website
  • And more

These are essential link profiles to analyze if you want to bridge competitors’ gaps and find link opportunities you never knew existed.

SE Ranking offers a backlink checker tool that lets you analyze the following link data:

  • New, lost, and active links
  • Referring linking domain
  • Number of backlinks to the analysis website
  • Anchor text – you can check by word count, link attributes, number of links, and date.
  • Referring IP
  • Distribution map by country and ccTLDs.
  • Authority score of the linking domain

Overall, there is so much going on with the SE Ranking backlink checker tool

Semrush Analytics

The test site results provide more information in the Semrush backlink analytics tool.

Semrush backlink analytics dashboard showing a 56 authority score, 7.1K referring domains, and graphs for new versus lost backlinks.

On this report page, there were a few more data:

  • Monthly visit
  • Link toxic score
  • Link type – image, text, video, form, and frame
  • Referring domains by country
  • Keywords
  • Business categories of links
  • Live updates of links

Semrush provides more in-depth link data for analysis in its report. You can achieve more with the Semrush backlink analytics tool than with SE Ranking.

From the analyzed domain, both backlink tools report many referring domains and backlinks.

So, picking the winner here is not about the accuracy of SEO tool data, but about the features required to run a full-scale link analysis campaign.

SE Ranking offers a simple backlink checker. This is enough if you’re checking for link sources, attributes, anchor text, and more.

Semrush offers more built-in features that provide deep insights into link data, so you can achieve more with less.

Its backlink database contains over 43 trillion indexed links and continues to grow.

For example, SE Ranking only reports link attributes as do-follow/nofollow, while Semrush goes one step further in its report:

Keyword Research

Keywords are the currency in search marketing.

The amount of organic traffic you could get depends on how well your keywords are refined and targeted.

So, using the right tool is very important in SEO.

Let’s see how Semrush and SE Ranking compete in this regard.

SE Ranking

From its databases of 190 countries, you can research keywords by your target location and analyze marketing metrics to help you pick the right terms.

There are several keyword tools in SE Ranking:

Keyword overview

The keyword overview tool gives you a broad insight into your analyzed search term. On its dashboard, you’ll see the following keyword metrics for your focus search query:

  • Search volume
  • Keyword difficulty
  • CPC – cost per click
  • Related keywords
  • Organic search results for the analyzed keyword
  • Keyword Idea – related and similar keywords.
  • Popular Ads for the analyzed keyword.
  • Ranking Dynamics – Historical data.

Keyword Suggestions

The keyword suggestion tool gives you deep insights into your keyword data. And provide additional research tools for keyword analysis.

You can filter keyword data by:

  • Related
  • Similar
  • Search volume
  • Word count
  • Character
  • Cost per click
  • Competition
  • Relevancy
  • Exclude/Include
  • SERP features

In addition, you can see the top 100 ranking pages in SERP for the analyzed search term, along with estimated traffic cost.

And you can export your keyword data in Excel or CSV files.

Organic Results

This is a competitive analysis tool. Here, you can analyze the top-ranking URLs in SERP for a given keyword by:

  • Ranking URLs
  • Traffic share
  • Traffic cost
  • Number of backlinks
  • Referring domains
  • Number of Ranking keywords
  • Domain Trust and Page Trust
  • SERP position

In a nutshell, you get deep insights into competitors’ ranking pages for your target keyword.

Ads History

Get the PPC campaign data for websites that target keywords similar to your search phrase. This is a valuable tool for PPC advertisers.

It lets you see competitors’ ad copy, landing pages, and traffic costs. You need to click on the domain URL to dig deeper into each competitor’s domain metrics

Keyword Manager

This feature is handy for keeping your keywords organized and manually adding them to SE Ranking.

It is also helpful in exporting keyword lists, grouping, and tracking keyword changes.

Semrush

Semrush boasts one of the largest keyword databases – 25 billion- and is still growing. And it has some of the best keyword tools on the market.

Here is what doing keyword analysis on its platforms is:

Keyword Overview

When you launch keyword research with the overview tool, first, you can analyze a single keyword or up to 100 keywords at once. This depends on your subscription plan.

The report is very comprehensive. On its dashboard, you have keyword data for:

  • Keyword intent
  • Advertisers competition level
  • Keyword trend for the past 12 months
  • Related keyword
  • Questions
  • Keyword variations
  • SERP analysis for the top tanking pages
  • Cost per click
  • Global and country-based search volume
  • Ad copy and ad history – how active advertisers bid on the keyword.
  • PLA copies

These are valuable keyword data to help your research.

Keyword Magic

This is where you get more marketing metrics for your keyword.

The Keyword Magic tool gives you deep insights into your analyzed keywords. You can filter the results by several selections:

  • Keyword-related search queries
  • Exact match keyword
  • Keywords to exclude from the result
  • Keywords to include in the result
  • Language
  • Semrush keyword difficulty
  • Keyword broad match
  • Number of words in the keyword – i.e., single, two, or three-word keyword
  • SERP features and results
  • Group keywords by common words

The keyword tool is more feature-rich and advanced than most tools today.

Keyword Manager

The Semrush keyword manager is a competitive keyword research tool that allows you to analyze up to 1,000 search queries for real-time data.

If you’re launching an extensive marketing campaign, this is an ideal tool to scale up the research process and discover hundreds of easy-to-rank keywords in bulk.

To drill down on keyword selection, you can filter the results by:

  • Tag keyword
  • Geolocation
  • Competitive density
  • Trends
  • Click Potential
  • Last known changes

The Semrush keyword manager gives you advanced options to research and manage your keywords for a better marketing campaign.

Organic Traffic Insights

Keyword research is more effective when you can gather data from multiple sources to compare, analyze, and get a big picture of your campaign.

This is what you get with Semrush Traffic Analytics Insights.

It lets you integrate Semrush with Google Search Console and Google Analytics, and import keyword data to gain deeper insights.

You can analyze mobile and desktop keyword data for more intelligent marketing decisions here.

Keyword Tool Verdict – Semrush Winner

Semrush is the clear winner here. The amount of data available in its keyword tool is incomparable to SE Ranking’s.

Its database of 21 billion keywords means you get more search queries than SE Ranking’s 7 billion keywords database.

Semrush keyword reports also include search term intent, which is not available in the SE Ranking. For this feature alone, I give it to Semrush.

Technical Site Audit

The first step toward a search-friendly website is to provide strong on-page SEO signals. The healthier and more optimized your website is, the better it ranks.

You need a solid website auditing tool to analyze your site pages in-depth. Let’s explore the SE Ranking and SEMrush Website Auditor tools.

SE Ranking

Overview

First, you can specify which user agent to crawl your website pages. SE Ranking has a few bots specified in its settings:

  • SEBot-WA
  • Googlebot
  • Googlebot-image
  • Bingbot
  • Yahoo! Slurp
  • Yandexbot
  • Baidu Spider
  • Chrome on Windows
  • Chrome on Mac OS
  •  Chrome on IOS
  • Firefox on Windows
  • Firefox on Linux
  • Safari on Mac OS
  •  Opera on Windows.

Except you know what you’re doing, you’d go with Googlebot or the SEBot-WA.

When you enter the domain URL and click the Start Audit button, the audit may take several minutes to complete.

Depending on the website size, sites with thousands of pages will take longer to complete.

When the audit is completed, an email notification is sent to your account. You can click through to view the site audit data.

The Website Auditor Overview dashboard has plenty of on-page SEO signals to wade through. You get deep insights into the following:

  • Pages Crawled – Total number of crawled website pages
  • Health Score – Overall website health score
  • Core Web Vitals – Google Core Web Vitals detailed report.
  • URL Found – Number of internal URLS found on the website.
  • Top Issues – A breakdown of the top 5 errors that need immediate attention
  • Distribution by Category – The category the error belongs to (Warning, Notice, or Critical)
  • Domain Metrics – Domain expiration date, backlink data, referring domain, Google, Bing, and Yahoo index pages.
  • Page Indexation – Number of not-indexed pages in search engines
  • HTTP Status Code – Scanned page distribution across HTTP response codes.
  • Click Depth – Number of clicks to reach a page
  • Meta Robots Tag – Percentage of scanned pages across the meta robots tag.

Issue Report

If you want to go technically in-depth into each specific error in the overview report, click on the Issue Reports in the sidebar menu.

This is where you can dive deep, analyze each error more in-depth, and get recommended SEO tips to fix it. Errors are grouped by relevance in the report.

Crawled Pages

The crawled pages tool gives you great insights into the on-page technical factors of your website pages. Here you can see:

  • The number of crawled pages on your site.
  • Number of internal links to each page
  • Number of errors found on each page
  • HTTPS/HTTP Protocol
  • HTTPS server response code
  • Robots.txt status code for each page
  • The page title and title length
  • Meta description character length
  • Canonical URL for the page
  • H1 Heading found on the page and the number of characters.
  • Pages with more than an H1 title tag
  • Duplicate the H1 title on different pages.
  • H2 found on pages and pages with multiple H2 tags
  • Depth of clicks to reach the page from the home page
  • Refresh the redirect time
  • Link attributes – do-follow or nofollow
  • Number of internal links pointing to each page and its attributes
  • Internal/external links

Found Resources

This feature helps identify resources that affect your site’s page speed. SE Ranking did an impressive job by separating this feature in the chart.

At a glance, you can see:

  • Source URL – how many URLS the resource found on your website
  • Type – the resource type – code, image, files, etc.
  • HTTPS status code
  • Page size
  • Loading time

These are important page optimization metrics for analyzing page speed and performance tests.

If you want to analyze all the URLs on your website (internal/external), the found links feature lets you do that here.

There is a list view of your site’s URLs organized by:

  • HTTPS status code
  • Type
  • Source URL
  • Anchor text
  • Anchor type
  • Alt Attributes
  • Link Attributes

This feature is handy for quickly navigating your website links and detecting certain issues.

Crawl Comparison

This feature lets you compare audit reports for a website on different dates and changes. You can compare the changes to the detected errors in the last report.

This is a good feature for tracking on-page SEO progress.

Page Changes Monitor

This is a helpful tool for tracking changes on a web page in real time. You can track several changes, including:

  • Changes H1 tag
  • HTTP status code
  • H2 tag in the content
  • Image alternative text
  • Headline
  • Body Content
  • Search engines index status (Bing, Yahoo, and Google)
  • Crawl
  • Internal and external links
  • Keywords in content
  • Page canonical

This could be useful for multi-author websites or when you’re in the middle of a campaign. And you don’t want anything to go wrong.

Semrush

When launching the site audit tool in Semrush, you need to set the crawling agent and a few parameters.

You can choose between the Google bot and SiteAuditBot, both available as desktop and mobile agents.

The Audit tool analyzes your pages for over 140 SEO errors.

You can review the list on the overview page to analyze the most critical error first.

Semrush site audit dashboard for cybernaira.com showing an 89% site health score, 91% AI search health, and technical SEO thematic reports.

There are a couple of things you need to pay attention to on the overview page, depending on the result:

  • Issues – On the navigation bar, clicking the issue menu displays a list view of issues. The good news is that Semrush provides SEO tips to resolve the error. If you hover your mouse over the text “Why and how to fix it,” a panel with implementation tips will appear.
  • Crawled Pages – On this tab, you see a list of your website pages, along with metrics: number of unique pageviews, crawl depth, number of issues affecting the page, robots.txt instructions, HTTP status codes, and an option to re-audit the URL.
  • Site Structure – The directory that is crawled on your site.
  • Statistics – The statistics give a two-way view (list and chart) of the errors found on your pages. It organized the errors by relevance and resources. This allows you to see the whole issue in one picture.
  • Compare Crawls – This feature lets you compare the SEO audit of a webpage against two different dates. You can see the changes you’ve made and any new issues that surface.
  • Progress: This feature lets you view a history of changes to your site’s on-page SEO factors. You can customize the report to include only what matters to you.

Technical SEO Audit Verdict – Draw (It’s a tie)

Honestly, it is very difficult to pick a winner here. I couldn’t identify any weaknesses or gaps in essential technical SEO features.

While SE Ranking appears to offer many features, we’re focusing on the essential tools that move the needle. Based on that, both tools have what is required to run an effective on-page technical SEO audit.

Let’s call this round a tie or let our audience decide.

Rank Tracking

Rank tracking is arguably the most widely used feature in any SEO platform.

It’s the daily pulse check on whether your content strategy is actually working. And this is one category where SE Ranking pulls ahead in a way that surprises most people.

SE Ranking

SE Ranking built its reputation on rank tracking accuracy.

Unlike tools that aggregate data from third-party panels, SE Ranking pulls rank data directly from live SERPs on a per-keyword basis. That means you’re seeing what Google actually shows, not an averaged estimate.

On the Core plan, you get 2,000 keywords tracked daily. Every check runs automatically, but you can trigger on-demand checks at any time without waiting for the next scheduled crawl.

A few things that stand out:

  • ZIP-code level local tracking. If you’re doing local SEO, SE Ranking tracks rankings at the ZIP code level, not just at the city level. This matters for clients who need hyper-local accuracy.
  • Unlimited historical data. On the Growth plan, SE Ranking retains your ranking history for the entire lifetime of the account โ€” with no cap. This is a meaningful edge for long-running campaigns.
  • Share of Voice metric. You can see your estimated share of total search visibility for your tracked keyword set, which helps measure campaign momentum beyond individual position changes.
  • Multi-engine and mobile tracking. You can track rankings across Google, Yahoo, Bing, and YouTube, with separate desktop and mobile data.

Here is a look at the SE Ranking AI Results Tracker dashboard, which now sits alongside the core rank tracking tools as part of its expanded search visibility suite:

SE Ranking dashboard showing keyword rankings for wprblogger.com including positions for terms like what are the best WordPress themes and how do I find premium themes.

NOTE:

The tracked website in this project drives little to no traffic. This explains the lack of data in the AI Tracker report above.

The AI Results Tracker is separate from the standard rank tracker, but they live in the same project sidebar. This is exactly the kind of clean integration that makes SE Ranking easy to use.

Semrush

Semrush’s Position Tracking tool covers the core requirements well โ€” daily SERP pulls, mobile vs desktop splits, competitor comparisons, and visibility percentage over time.

On the Pro plan, you can track up to 500 keywords. The Guru plan raises this to 1,500.

One thing worth noting: Semrush applies a 24-hour smoothing window to its rank data, which can occasionally produce a 1โ€“2 position lag on fast-moving queries.

For most ongoing campaigns, this is a minor issue, but it’s worth knowing if you’re in a volatile niche where positions shift rapidly.

Semrush also caps historical ranking data at 18 months on the Guru plan, compared to SE Ranking’s unlimited retention on the Growth plan.

Rank Tracking Verdict: SE Ranking Winner

For accuracy, keyword limits at comparable price points, local tracking granularity, and unlimited historical data, SE Ranking has the clear edge in rank tracking. This is the one category where SE Ranking wins by a meaningful margin, not just on price, but on capability.

AI Search Visibility Tracking

When I originally wrote this comparison, tracking your SEO performance meant one thing: watching where your pages rank in Google’s blue-link results. That picture has changed dramatically.

In 2026, Google AI Overviews appeared in over 25% of searches. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are now real discovery channels, especially for comparison and research queries like the kind that bring readers to articles like this one.

If your content isn’t appearing in AI-generated answers, you’re missing a growing share of search visibility that traditional rank tracking simply cannot measure.

Both SE Ranking and Semrush have built dedicated tools for this. Here’s how they compare.

SE Ranking: AI Search Toolkit

SE Ranking’s approach to AI visibility is built into its platform as an add-on called the AI Search Toolkit ($89/mo monthly, or $71.20/mo annually). It covers the full landscape of AI search channels:

  • AI Results Tracker: Tracks your brand’s mention and link presence across AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, for prompts you define.
  • AI Overviews Tracker: Dedicated analytics for Google’s AI Overviews, including which competitors are featured and which source domains appear most frequently.
  • Competitive Research: Shows which AI sources are boosting your competitors and identifies source opportunities you haven’t tapped yet.
  • SE Visible: A standalone strategic dashboard (bundled with the add-on) for tracking brand mentions, citation patterns, and sentiment trends across AI platforms over time.

Here’s a look at the SE Ranking AI Results Tracker in action on a live account โ€” this is tracking WPrBlogger.com across six prompts related to WordPress themes, hosting, and SEO tools:

SE Ranking AI tracker for search prompt showing link position, mentions position, and date range.

The “Insights & Recommendations” panel does the heavy lifting for you: it identifies sources appearing in AI answers that aren’t yet linking to your brand, and flags where your competitors are getting citation boosts.

SE Ranking AI Results Tracker sources dashboard for wprblogger.com showing brand mention opportunities and a comparison graph of AI answers versus source citations for various WordPress tools.

For a solo blogger or small team, this surfaces actionable content and outreach priorities without requiring you to run manual queries across every AI platform.

One thing worth noting about AI tracking in general: because AI systems like ChatGPT and Gemini generate non-deterministic responses, no tool can give you perfectly precise, repeatable metrics.

SE Ranking positions this data as “directional intelligence” โ€” the right framing. You use it to identify trends and source gaps, not to monitor exact positions the way you would in a traditional rank tracker.

Semrush: AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush’s AI visibility offering is more comprehensive in scope โ€” and more expensive. The AI Visibility Toolkit is priced separately at $99 per domain per month, in addition to your core SEO plan. For that price, you get:

  • Visibility Overview: An overall AI visibility score (0โ€“100) for your domain, with distribution across ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, AI Mode, and Gemini. The demo below shows what this looks like for a real brand:
Semrush AI Visibility overview for warbyparker.com showing medium visibility score with metrics for mentions, citations, and cited pages across LLMs like ChatGPT and Gemini.
  • Brand Performance: Deep analysis of how your brand is mentioned across AI platforms: Share of Voice vs. competitors, sentiment analysis, favorable vs. unfavorable mention trends, and which brand attributes are driving AI recommendations.
Semrush AI brand performance dashboard for warbyparker.com displaying brand perception, narrative drivers, and sentiment analysis across AI platforms.
  • Narrative Drivers: Shows how AI models frame your brand compared to competitors, surfacing the specific storylines that appear in generated answers.
  • Questions: Surfaces the real questions users are asking AI tools about your product category, with intent distribution and topic clustering.

The depth here is impressive. Semrush’s AI visibility data is genuinely richer than SE Ranking’s โ€” it goes beyond “are you mentioned?” into “how are you being described, and is that description helping or hurting you?”

For brands managing reputation in AI answers, or agencies running multi-client AI visibility campaigns, the Semrush toolkit gives you more to work with.

But there’s a cost reality to be honest about. To access the full AI Search Toolkit on SE Ranking, you’re paying $129/mo (Core) + $89/mo (AI Search add-on) = $218/mo monthly, or as low as $103.20 + $71.20 = $174.40/mo annually.

That said, even the base Core plan already includes 100 AI prompts tracked daily at no extra cost. This is enough to get you started with basic AI visibility monitoring before committing to the full add-on.

On the Semrush side, accessing both SEO tools and AI visibility requires either a core plan ($139.95/mo Pro) + AI Visibility Toolkit ($99/mo) = $238.95/mo minimum, or a Semrush One bundle starting at $165/mo annually, which bundles both together more cleanly.

And there’s one more thing Semrush does that SE Ranking doesn’t yet fully match: the Site Audit tool now flags specific AI Search health issues alongside traditional SEO errors.

In an audit of CyberNaira.com, Semrush flagged “Content not optimized (AI Search)” across 4 pages and “Links with no anchor text (AI Search)” on 18 pages โ€” concrete, actionable signals about AI crawlability that SE Ranking’s audit tool doesn’t currently surface at the same level.

Semrush Site Audit overview for CyberNaira.com showing an 89% site health score, crawled pages, AI search health, errors, and SEO warnings.

AI Visibility Verdict: Semrush Wins on Depth, SE Ranking Wins on Value

If you’re running a brand-level AI visibility strategy โ€” tracking sentiment, competitive Share of Voice across multiple LLMs, and narrative framing โ€” Semrush’s toolkit is the more powerful instrument. The data goes deeper, and the insights are more strategic.

For solo bloggers, affiliate marketers, and small agency teams who want to start tracking AI visibility without incurring steep additional costs, SE Ranking’s AI Search add-on covers the essentials: which prompts trigger your brand, which sources appear instead of you, and where your competitors are cited.

It’s enough to build a content and outreach strategy around.

The honest summary:

SE Ranking gives you a practical AI tracking entry point. Semrush gives you an enterprise-grade AI intelligence suite. What you need depends entirely on the scale of your operation.

Competitive Analysis

If you want to grow fast, scale your business, and minimize trial and error, competitive analysis should be at the center of your SEO strategy.

Here’s how SE Ranking compares to Semrush in competitive analysis tools.

SE Ranking

Overview

First, SE Ranking lets you perform location-based competitor analysis from these databases:

  • Country – select by country.
  • Continent – Select the target continent
  • Worldwide – analyze worldwide data.

This provides a highly targeted option for narrowing your analysis to a specific marketing campaign.

But at the time of writing, you can only research competitions for the Google search engine database. That’s never an issue, anyway.

Next, the competition overview dashboard provides extensive data for analysis.

  • Backlinks data
  • Top organic ranking pages
  • Traffic data
  • Traffic distribution by country
  • Organic ranking keywords data – new, lost, improved, and decreased.
  • Organic ranking keyword distributions
  • SERP features – knowledge card, rich snippet, images, video, People Also Ask, Site links, carousel, reviews, and ads.
  • Top organic competitors for the analysis domain
  • Organic competitor’s semantic comparison – overlapping keywords
  • Paid marketing metrics
  • Top organic subdomains

Organic Traffic Research

Under the organic traffic research menu, you have a list of competitive analysis tools. Let’s walk through it.

Keyword – Analyze competitor’s keyword data by the different locations it drives traffic. See each location’s ranking keyword, SERP features, ranking URL, keywords, traffic cost, search volume, and more.

Ranking Changes – A detailed view of historical data of competitors’ keyword position changes in SERP. You can view data dating back to February 2020.

Competitors – A comprehensive list of your competitors’ traffic and backlink data. There are columns for missing keywords, common keywords, total keywords, traffic cost, and total traffic. You have a detailed comparison graph for backlinks, keywords, total traffic, and traffic cost.

Competitor Comparison – Compare up to 5 of your competitors side by side with your website. And see the number of ranking keywords, keyword difficulty, SERP features, competitor’s level, and cost-per-click data for each domain.

Traffic Distribution By Country – A map covering the top five countries with the highest traffic to your website pages.

Pages – The top pages on the analyzed domain, along with each URL’s traffic share percentage, number of organic ranking keywords, estimated traffic volume, and estimated traffic cost.

Subdomains – An overview of existing subdomains on the analyzed website with traffic and keyword data.

The paid traffic research tool provides an overview of your competitors’ paid search marketing metrics. You can filter the results by keyword difficulty, character, word count, traffic share, search volume, position, etc.

Organic Research

To win the SERP, you must monitor and know what your competitors are doing to reach the top ten.

This is what the tool lets you achieve.

It lets you research the opportunity gap between your website and your competitors.

You can see the keywords that bring them traffic, top-ranking pages, changes in keyword position, SERP placement and features, organic traffic costs, and more.

Overall, it lets you dig deep into your competitors’ top-performing keywords. You can identify gaps and opportunities to grow.

The backlink gap lets you run a link analysis of up to 5 domains at once and get a detailed report about each analyzed URL.

Enter your website and four other competitors’ domains to start the tool, and hit the “find prospect” button. The report will display all link data about each competitor’s link profile.

You can see all referring domains to your competitor’s website, link attributes, authority score, lost, new, and old links, etc.

This is a helpful tool to start your link-building outreach campaign.

The purpose of this tool is to identify websites that link to your competitors but not to you.

You can discover opportunities to identify potential link partners.

Competitive Analysis Verdict – Semrush Winner

While SE Ranking put up a good fight in this area, the competitive research data available in each Semrush analysis tool can not be overlooked.

However, one feature that impressed the SE Ranking competitive research tool is the ability to research competitors from more target options, i.e., at the continental level.

Other than this, Semrush is the clear winner.

Pricing

Price is often the deciding factor between SE Ranking and Semrush โ€” and the real picture is more nuanced than a simple “SE Ranking is cheaper.”

SE Ranking Pricing

SE Ranking currently offers two main plans:

Core: $129/mo (monthly) | $103.20/mo (annual)

  • 10 projects, 1 manager seat
  • 2,000 keywords tracked daily
  • 100 AI prompts tracked daily
  • 250,000 pages per month in site audit
  • 14-day free trial, no credit card required

Growth: $279/mo (monthly) | $223.20/mo (annual)

  • 30 projects, 3 manager seats
  • 5,000 keywords tracked daily
  • 250 AI prompts tracked daily
  • 2 million pages per month in site audit
  • Unlimited historical data
  • API access

Key add-ons:

  • AI Search Toolkit: +$89/mo (monthly) or +$71.20/mo (annual) โ€” expands AI tracking significantly: full AI Results Tracker across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, plus SE Visible access.
  • Note: both Core and Growth already include basic AI/GEO prompt tracking (100 and 250 prompts/day, respectively) at no extra cost. The add-on is for teams that need deeper tracking, competitive intelligence, and the SE Visible dashboard.
  • Agency Pack: +$69/mo (annual only) โ€” white-label reporting, client seats, lead generator

PRO TIP!

The modular structure is a genuine advantage: you pay for what you actually use rather than subsidizing a bundle of features you’ll never touch.

Semrush Pricing

Semrush’s three core SEO plans are:

Pro: $139.95/mo (monthly) | $117.33/mo (annual)

  • 5 projects, 500 keywords tracked
  • 10,000 results per report
  • No content marketing toolkit, no historical data

Guru: $249.95/mo (monthly) | $208.33/mo (annual)

  • 15 projects, 1,500 keywords tracked
  • Historical data, content marketing toolkit, and multi-location tracking
  • White-label PDF reports

Business: $499.95/mo (monthly) | $416.66/mo (annual)

  • 40 projects, 5,000 keywords tracked
  • API access, Share of Voice, extended limits

Note on AI visibility:

Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit is a separate purchase at $99/mo per domain, and is not included in any of the core SEO plans above.

However, Semrush also offers Semrush One bundles that combine the SEO toolkit with AI visibility features in a single subscription โ€” a more cost-effective path if you want both from day one:

  • Starter: $199/mo (monthly) | $165/mo (annual) โ€” 5 websites, 500 keywords, 50 AI prompts, 1 domain for AI brand performance
  • Pro+: $299/mo (monthly) | $248/mo (annual) โ€” 15 websites, 1,500 keywords, 100 AI prompts, historical SEO data, content optimization
  • Advanced: $549/mo (monthly) | $455/mo (annual) โ€” 40 websites, 5,000 keywords, 200 AI prompts, MCP and API data access

Additional users on core SEO plans cost $45/mo (Pro), $80/mo (Guru), or $100/mo (Business) per seat.

Pricing Verdict: SE Ranking

At comparable feature levels, SE Ranking costs meaningfully less โ€” often 30โ€“50% less when you account for what you’re actually using.

Its 14-day no-credit-card trial is a genuine advantage over Semrush’s 7-day trial that requires payment information upfront.

That said, if you need Semrush’s scale โ€” a 25-billion-keyword database, a 43-trillion-backlink index, real-time index refreshes, and deep AI brand intelligence โ€” the premium is justifiable.

You’re paying for more data, not just a bigger brand name.

Semrush and SE Ranking offer additional tools beyond those discussed on this page, but these are essential for any website.

FAQ – SE Ranking vs Semrush

The Semrush comparison with SE Ranking won’t be completed without answering a few standard questions in the SEO community.

Is There a Free Alternative to Semrush?

Several free tools, such as Google Keyword Planner, Search Console,ย Ubersuggest, and AnswerThePublic, offer alternatives to Semrush. But SE Ranking is a good choice if you’re looking for a more affordable option with premium features.

Is SE Ranking Accurate?

I compared the SE ranking data with Semrush, and the differences are not significant. Based on my analysis, SE Ranking’s data report is accurate.ย There may be slight differences in SEO data across most tools, which is understandable. Given that the methodology and data sources are different, there will be slight differences.ย

Is Semrush The Best SEO?

Semrush is one of the best marketing and SEO tools today. However, many SEO tools offer excellent features, making it impossible to handpick a single tool as the best. A tool is as good as it serves your marketing and business needs.

Can SE Ranking replace Semrush?

For most solo bloggers, content creators, and small agencies, yes โ€” SE Ranking covers all the core SEO workflows: keyword research, site audit, rank tracking, backlink analysis, competitive research, and now AI visibility tracking. The gaps only become noticeable if you need Semrush’s scale: its 25-billion keyword database, 43-trillion link index, real-time backlink data, or the advanced AI brand intelligence in its AI Visibility Toolkit.

Is Semrush worth the extra cost over SE Ranking?

It depends on what you need. If you publish content regularly and need the deepest possible keyword and backlink data for competitive research in a high-authority niche, Semrush’s larger databases justify the premium. If you’re a solo blogger, affiliate marketer, or small agency primarily focused on rank tracking, site auditing, and growing AI search visibility without breaking the budget, SE Ranking delivers 80โ€“90% of Semrush’s value at a significantly lower price point.
