In a recent development after MOZ published an article on their blog titled Amazing Correlation Between Google Plus1 And Higher Search Ranking, Matt Cutts, Google head of spam search responded in this way on Hackers News thread ” Correlation !=Causation”.
Matts claim that Google+1 does not in any way have direct impact on ranking higher in search result pages.
He went along saying ” Just trying to decide the politest way to debunk the idea that more Google Plus1s lead to higher Google web rankings. Let’s start with correlation != causation.”
In another comments of his Matt Cutts says “Isn’t surprising content with more likes or +1 have better ranking. If you make compelling content, people will link to it, like it, share it on Facebook, +1 it,e.t.c.
MOZ on the other hand claim to carried out a scientific correlation study to discover the web pages that have better or most strongest relationship with ranking high in Google search engine.
Well, MOZ is not the only one to have discovered this, Search Metrics in a very similar or better scientific research than MOZ came out with this astonishing result.
Way back in 2011, a very similar research carried out by MOZ shows correlation between Facebook likes and higher search engine ranking. This resulted into controversy in which Google came out to defend this claim made by MOZ. Says their ranking factors is never influence by any social signal or reputation.
Well, I believe both sides are on the right course.
This is it, if your content is of high quality and improved the user experience and engagements, it will get likes, shares, +1 and established you as an authority in your industry.
It is not that the number of likes or +1 a page get is directly responsible for its place in search engine, but normally, a good quality content written for human, that meet user expectation will get shared and if found by other bloggers will get linked to – back-links– .
My take on this, focus on creating good quality pillar content and be a better marketer. Learn how to drive targeted traffic to your offer and forget all the SEO hullabaloo.
No one who is directly in-control of how web pages are rank will come out and tell you this is how it really works. They have to protect their system against spamming and exploitation.
So you shouldn’t expect Matt Cutts to come out and tell you this is their criteria for ranking top in SERP.
Come to think of it, only 10 spot is available on that first page of SERP and millions of pages competing to make it. Write your contents and market it to those who need it. ASAP.
